Forgiveness is one of the core themes of Christianity. In the Lord’s Prayer, we say, “forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us,” and as Lutherans, we confess the central importance of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus as the promise of God’s mercy. This Lent, we will proclaim the extraordinary gift of God’s forgiveness in Christ and reflect on what it means to trust that we are truly forgiven. Together, we will consider how forgiveness shapes our identity, our faith, and our calling to live as leaders in a culture of grace.

At the same time, we will honestly wrestle with how forgiveness unfolds in real, broken lives. Is forgiveness always possible? Is it always the right thing? Through Sunday worship, the writings of Desmond Tutu, the imprecatory psalms, interview sermons, and small group conversations, we will explore both the promise and the complexity of forgiveness.

Sunday Westwood U

Most Sundays between worship services, Westwood hosts an educational program for lifelong learning, "Westwood U." It is held in the Westwood Room from 10:05-10:55 am.

During Lent, there will be three Sundays with video and discussion on the topic of forgiveness.

We invite members and guests, ranging from young adults to our most experienced elders, to attend.

In the first week of March, we will celebrate the great work of our intern pastor over the last year at 10 am. The following three weeks in March, WWU will feature video excerpts from "The Forgiveness Project," followed by guided discussions.

Small Groups

As we journey through Lent, the small group curriculum will explore and dive deeper into scriptures in combination with "The Book of Forgiving," by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter, Mpho Tutu. Each week, we’ll reflect on their vision of forgiveness — shaped by their lives and by the collective trauma and healing of South Africa — alongside our own stories of harm and healing. The book is a helpful companion, but it’s not required.

We do not expect to walk neatly through forgiveness and healing within five weeks. However, we hope you discover a framework for forgiveness, God’s presence in your own story, and a group to support you. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18.

Groups will meet for 5 weeks, beginning the week of February 22.

Wednesday Evening Worship & Programs

Midweek Evening Worship

Wednesdays, 6:30-7:15 pm

Our midweek worship during Lent will take a unique format, focusing on the theme "Forgiveness in Real Life."

Each week, one of the imprecatory psalms will be used; those defined by anger, hurt, and the prayer for vengeance toward our enemy. Part of worship will include an interview sermon in which someone reflects on the pain, suffering, or trauma they may have endured. Topics will include alcoholism, Palestinian and Israeli conflict, rejection and belonging, Holocaust trauma, and divorce. These conversations will invite honest reflection, not expectations of forgiveness.

We gather in community and are invited into prayer, reflection, and healing, as we pause to allow God's presence among us.
