FIRST COMMUNION

Westwood practices open communion, meaning people of all ages, theological backgrounds, and levels of training are welcome to commune.

How it works.

We offer once a year communion training (usually in February) and welcome people of all ages to participate. If you would like your child to experience a more traditional first communion, we have stole kits for them to decorate following a training and they are welcome to wear them the first Sunday they commune. Contact Ann Sundermeyer with questions.

Our Theological Understanding.

Communion is one of two sacraments in the Lutheran church. At Westwood, we believe that communion is a gift for each and every one of us, and that it can be taken by anyone who understands that it is a gift for them, at any age and in any way appropriate to their development. We believe that understanding is an impossible task, and that we all learn and relearn what this gift means, many times in our lives. We practice open communion (communion for any age), trusting that God's gift of grace through this meal is appropriate for anyone who wishes to receive it.

For young kids, if you, as parents, would like for them to receive communion, please direct your child to put their hands out and let the server know.

All are welcome at God’s table, a table where we are forgiven, welcomed as we are, and strengthened to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.
